FAQ:  How Can I control energy costs?

With energy costs soaring, there are a variety of steps you can take to cut the expenses of heating and cooling your home.  Heating and cooling equipment use more energy than any other appliances.  The results of this energy usage show up in each month in your utility bills.  You can reduce your home's energy costs by ensuring that your equipment is operating efficiently.

Schedule annual maintenance checks to ensure that your home heating and cooling systems are running properly.  Dirty heating and cooling equipment can cause loss of efficiency and can damage the mechanics of your systems.  A properly maintained system will perform at it's peak effeciency, saving you money every month.

High Efficiency:  When buying or replacing your heating and cooling equipment consider purchasing a high-effciency system.  You can reduce your costs and conserve our natural resources.  Pay close attention to  the SEER rating of the cooling system and the AFUE of the heating system.  The higher the SEER or AFUE rating, the higher the fuel cost savings.

Zoning: Zoning your home can drastically lower your utility costs.  When you zone you home, you don't heat or cool the whole house just to make one room comfortable.  Zoning divides your home into separate confort areas, which are heated and cooled based on your needs.

Programmable Thermostats:  Programmable thermostats can make a huge difference in energy consumption.  These thermostats are used to achieve the temperature you want throughout your home in advance.  For example, if you're away you can set the whole house at an energy-saving temperature and reduce the costs of heating and cooling when the house is empty.  You can then program your the thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature to a more comfortable level by the time you arrive back home.

FAQ:  What is a BTU?

A BTU (British thermal unit) is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of liquid water by one degree Fahrenheit.

FAQ:  What is a Ton?

A ton is a unit of measure for an air conditioners capacity.  One ton can remove up to 12,000 BTU’s per hour.

FAQ:  What is AFUE?

AFUE (Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is a measure of your furnace’s heating efficiency.  The higher the AFUE percentage, the more efficient the furnace.

FAQ:  What is Freon?

Also called “refrigerant,” it is a fluid that produces a cooling effect while expanding or vaporizing.  The most common types of refrigerants are R-22, and the newly introduced R410-A.

FAQ:  What is an “A Coil?”

An "A coil" named because of it's "A" shaped copper coil, cools the air as the blower forces air through the chilled coil.  People tend to think that the "A coil" is part of the furnace, but it is actually a vital part of the Air Conditioning system.

FAQ:  What is a SEER Rating?

A SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is an energy efficiency rating for air conditioners.  The higher the SEER, the better the energy performance.

FAQ:  What does Energy Star mean?

A label attached to HVAC systems that meet or exceed the EPA guidelines energy efficiency.
